A Quick Dip in Bahia Honda State Park

Bahia Honda State Park is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. You’ll locate this sanctuary on Big Pine Key just an hour north of Key West. The park offers many ways to explore Florida’s natural beauty by offering endless activities and amenities. You don’t just have to enjoy the water activities, there’s birding, camping, and stargazing too.

Upon driving in there’ll be three beaches to choose from. Loggerhead features shallow calm water, Calusa presents scenic picnic pavilions along its bay, and Sandspur offers the biggest beach on the island. If you’re just interested in a calm swim like I was Loggerhead is your best choice.

Stepping onto Loggerhead’s shore is serene. Towering palm trees and dense bushes line its entrance. On the sand stands a green beach flag signaling calm conditions. You’ll puzzle through some beach rock cemented into the sand to get to some good snorkeling spots. Or walk further down into a turquoise shallow entry where toddlers and loungers can laze in.

It’s bright, warm, and welcoming as the sun’s rays penetrate and highlight each wave and ripple. The calm waters are just above my calves as my legs glide through. Families gather with their young ones and lay in the water that’s only about a foot deep. Mother and daughters lay on their stomachs and sides mermaiding under the sun. Fathers lounge crisscross with their babies as they splash about.

The water darkens to a navy blue further out as biological activity increases, though it’s still close enough for shore-entry snorkeling. Carlos and I nestle on some large rocks just along the darker shore. Nearby, child-free groups hang out with drinks in hand. If “take it easy” were a place it’d be Loggerhead!

Pockets of family and friend groups sprouting along the coast without time on their mind is a testament to the allure of simple pleasures. Loggerhead Beach leaves a lasting impression of family-friendly charm as chatter and laughter echo along the coast. If you prefer lounging to swimming, check out Loggerhead Beach!
